Tips on how to take photographs of your animal•••••

I paint from photographs made by the owners of the respective animals. But not every photo provides an opportunity to create a good painting from it. Therefore I compiled a few tips and examples which maybe will help to achieve an ideal picture.

The sharper, the better. As many details as possible should be visbile. Furthermore the animal should appear as large as possible on the photo.

Daylight is always first class, but also a flashlight will do it – preferably diffused (indirect).

Try to get on the same level with the animal. Pictures taken "from above" (top view) often are not very attractive. Put your darling on a chair or on a table, or get down to the floor.

The more pictures you take, the bigger is the chance to get a photo that shows your animal's best or most typical sight.

Size, light and perspective are harmonious. Especially charming: the animal's attention is targeted at something beyond, which generates a very vital impression.

Good size, many details are visible and the motif is well lighted. But the contrast to the background is too weak, and the top view reduces the expressiveness.

The good quality of this picture compensates for the small size. The contrast to the background is relativeley weak, but the incidence of light provides an almost "magic" atmosphere.

Photo left: The flashlight gives the cat a hard shadow so that its contour vanishes in parts. No pupils visible, and the fur shows no details. Better (photo right): Neutral background, no hard shadows, eyes and fur showing many details.
